On Tuesday, May 9, a 44-year-old Flower Hill man attempted to purchase an item online, the Nassau County Police Department reported.
However, the website asked the man to provide personal information, and he soon canceled the purchasing process as it made him uncomfortable.
The next day, the victim received a call from an unknown man claiming he was a Bank of America Fraud Specialist, police said.
According to the scammer, the victim’s bank account had been compromised, and in order to remedy it, the victim would need to transfer money from his current account into a new, unknown one, set up by the scammer.
The scammer then reportedly sent the Flower Hill man a new card in the mail. Once received, the victim transferred his money over to the new account.
From Thursday, May 11 to Tuesday, May 16, the man transferred approximately $16,900 into the scammer’s account, police reported.
After realizing that this was a scam, the victim contacted authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Detectives ask that anyone with information regarding the scam contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
Nassau County police urged the community to be alert to potential scams and to check in on friends and family members that may be vulnerable to these scams.
